An Advocate For Education And A Representative For Minorities
"I don't think I would be wondering about what college I want to go to, if I hadn't joined Agents Of Change. Especially if I hadn't met Dr. Coronado, just for the simple fact that he would ask me about prospective universities and make me feel confident about my future." - Jonathan Hernandez (Member of Agents Of Change)

"I thank Dr. Miguel and his fiancee ,Rene' Calderon, because they have dedicated so much time to mentoring me over the last two years. I wouldn't be where I am at now without them and I am so grateful. The elongated hours spent at his dinner table figuring out my classes is only one example of his kindness." - Randee Maddox
(Member of Agents of Change/AVID Tutor)

Dr. Miguel A. Coronado's Candidacy Statement
I am a proud first generation college graduate. I hold an AA in Liberal Studies from Victor Valley Community College, a BA in Political Science from the University of California Riverside, a MA in Educational Counseling from California State University, San Bernardino; and a Doctorate of Education in Educational Leadership Higher Education Administration from Argosy University, Orange County. Recent high school graduates and families, not being able to afford the high cost of private and public 4-year college tuition, and dislocated workers who can’t find work and need to update their skills, they turn to Antelope Valley College as the most practical and affordable choice.
The qualifications and perspective I bring to the board includes serving as an academic counselor and professor in the community college setting for the last five years. Currently, I teach at Victor Valley Community College, and I also recruit students for California State University of Long Beach’s Electrical and Mechanical engineering satellite program at the Lancaster University Center. In addition, I am the founder of Agents of Change, a non-profit academic organization that focuses on recruiting, retaining, graduating and transferring students to four year universities.
I am honored to serve my community on a number of community advisories and boards such as, the City of Lancaster Planning Commission, the Lancaster Sheriff's Station community advisory, the Antelope Valley Hospital Board community advisory, Chairman of the Antelope Valley Hospital Drugs, Alcohol and Tobacco Project, and Co-Chairman of the Lancaster School District Measure L bond advisory board.
As a former community college student, I know what it is like for our students struggling to navigate the educational system while having to work, go to school and take care of a family. As a trustee, I will make sure we continue to provide timely and relevant post-secondary educational opportunities and supports for those who want to pursue academic transfer for a four-year degree, or obtain career and technical training to gain skills to achieve a better position in the workforce. I also pledge to be a vocal advocate for increasing the number of partnerships with community based organizations that focuses on strategies to improve both access and retention in order to increase the graduation rates for minority students. When elected, I will advocate that Antelope Valley College increase partnerships with both public and private K-12 schools, this also involves helping primary and secondary institutions work with parents and guardians in preparing their children for college.
I humbly ask for your support and vote on Nov. 3rd.
Dr. Miguel A. Coronado
Candidate for Antelope Valley College Board of Trustees
